O.C. teen wins contest to sing National Anthem at Ducks game

We told you last month about the Orange County Register‘s annual Oh Say Can You Sing? contest in which one lucky winner would get to sing the National Anthem at the Anaheim Ducks game against the Edmonton Oilers on April 1. And a whole bunch of you submitted videos of yourselves singing your finest vocals.

Those entries were whittled down to a Top 10 by your votes, and from there the top two vote-getters — Delaney Bell and Josiah Smith — and two judges’ picks – Kari Yeager and Nicole Garrison — were invited to tiptoe onto the ice at Honda Center on Tuesday afternoon to sing the anthem for a panel of expert judges, with yours truly among them.

It had to be a bit anxiety provoking to perform the song, solo with no accompaniment, inside the empty arena, but all four acquitted themselves nicely. Just like Jennifer Lopez on “American Idol” we felt the “goosies” — goosebumps — coming as they sang (though that might also have been the chilly temperature on ice — you never know.)

In any event, the decision was a tough one, with the four judges split at first before finally coming around to the consensus that Josiah Smith, a senior at Orange Lutheran High School, was the one to pick.

He gets two tickets to the game on April 1 as well as a variety of Ducks’ swag. And, he gets the chance to sing before more people than he’s ever performed before in his life.

Check out the video above to see and hear all four of the contestants singing parts of the song, and then come back and let us know whether we made the right pick.
